If you're exploring fertility treatment, you'll often hear about IUI and IVF. Both can help couples conceive, but they work in different ways and suit different situations. Here is a plain-language look at what each involves and how a specialist decides which may be right for you.

IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a simpler, less invasive fertility treatment. Around the time of ovulation, prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus to shorten the journey to the egg and improve the chance of conception. It is often considered as an early step, sometimes alongside medication that supports ovulation.
IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, is a more involved treatment. Eggs are collected and combined with sperm in a laboratory, and a resulting embryo is later placed in the uterus. Because more of the process is supported directly, IVF is usually considered when simpler options are not suitable or have not worked.
IUI is gentler and usually tried first where appropriate, with fertilisation still happening naturally inside the body. IVF is more complex and supports fertilisation in the laboratory, which can help with a wider range of situations. The right choice depends on the cause of difficulty conceiving, age and previous history — not on one option being better than the other.
There is no single answer that fits everyone. A specialist reviews both partners, considers the likely cause, and usually starts with the least invasive option that makes sense for your situation. The best way to understand your own options is a consultation.
Often, yes — where it is suitable, IUI is a gentler first step. But not always; sometimes the situation points to IVF sooner. Your doctor will explain what makes sense for you.
It comes down to a proper assessment of both partners and the likely cause. A fertility consultation is the best way to understand which option fits your situation.
Dr. Nasreen's Tip
If you have been trying to conceive for a year — or six months if you are over 35 — it is worth booking a fertility assessment rather than waiting.
